Constituents in Kogi Central Senatorial District have initiated a recall process against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing a loss of confidence in her representation. The exercise, spanning two days across all polling units in the district's five local government areas, involves constituents signing a petition demanding her removal.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distanced itself from this exercise. According to INEC's regulations, a recall process must begin with a petition presented to the Commission's Chairman by representatives of the petitioners, after notifying the concerned lawmaker in writing. This notification should also be delivered to the legislator's official address, with copies sent to the presiding officer of the applicable legislature and published on the Commission’s website.

The current recall initiative against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has not followed these stipulated procedures, leading INEC to disown the exercise. This development underscores the importance of adhering to constitutional guidelines in recall processes to ensure their legitimacy and effectiveness.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is currently serving a six-month suspension after a confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during which she accused him of sexual harassment.

The situation highlights the complexities involved in the recall process and the necessity for constituents to follow due process as outlined by INEC to achieve their objectives.
