The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has accused Governor Monday Okpebholo of orchestrating the impeachment of elected local government chairmen using individuals they describe as "impostors." This controversy arose following the removal of Oredo Local Government Chairman, Dr. Tom Obaseki, by persons allegedly unaffiliated with the legitimate council election process.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the PDP's Caretaker Committee Chairman in Edo State, labeled the impeachment a "coup d'état," questioning the legitimacy of those involved. He expressed concern over the state's direction under Governor Okpebholo, criticizing the use of non-elected individuals to unseat duly elected officials.

Further allegations from the PDP suggest that Governor Okpebholo attempted to entice 17 local government legislative leaders with ₦2 million each to defect from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Chris Nehikhare, the PDP's Publicity Secretary in Edo, condemned this alleged misuse of state resources, emphasizing the need to prioritize critical sectors like security, public safety, education, and healthcare over political maneuvering.

In response, 17 out of 18 legislative leaders, who assumed acting chairmanship positions following the impeachment of elected officials, formally defected from the PDP to the APC. Governor Okpebholo commended their decision, urging unity within the APC and emphasizing his administration's commitment to the state's development.

This series of events has intensified political tensions in Edo State, with the PDP accusing Governor Okpebholo of undermining democratic processes and the governor's camp defending the actions as necessary for the state's progress.
