What is an escrow account, and how does it work?

An escrow account is a financial agreement where an asset or money is held by a third party on behalf of two other parties completing a transaction. Escrow accounts are managed by an escrow agent who releases the assets or funds only upon the fulfillment of predetermined contractual obligations. The following are examples of situations that may use escrow.
