Representative Ademorin Kuye, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, has articulated reasons for the National Assembly's anticipated support of President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Kuye emphasized that the government's foremost duty is to protect citizens' lives and property, asserting that the legislature must act decisively when democracy is threatened.

Highlighting the legislature's role in preserving democratic stability, Kuye recalled the Ninth National Assembly's intervention in the Edo State House of Assembly crisis. He noted that despite previous attempts, including President Tinubu's efforts to mediate the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, the crisis persisted, leading to significant disruptions and infrastructure damage.

Kuye underscored that, irrespective of party affiliations, lawmakers are committed to defending democracy and restoring order in Rivers State. He stated, "Without sentiment, we are going to defend democracy. In a situation where there is a breakdown of law and order, no responsible government will keep quiet and allow the anarchy to continue."

These remarks come in the context of President Tinubu's recent declaration of a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, which included the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly. The President cited escalating security concerns, including pipeline vandalism by militants, as justification for the emergency measures.
