Handling conflicts between your children and their friends requires a balanced approach that teaches problem-solving while maintaining their friendships. Here are some steps to consider:

Listen First

Encourage your child to share their side of the story without immediately taking sides. Ask open-ended questions to understand what happened.

Encourage Empathy

Help them see the situation from their friend's perspective. Ask, “How do you think they felt?”

Teach Problem-Solving

Guide your child in brainstorming possible solutions rather than jumping in to fix the issue for them. Encourage them to express their feelings using "I" statements (e.g., "I felt hurt when you...").

Promote Direct Communication

If appropriate, suggest they talk it out with their friend calmly rather than avoiding the issue.

Know When to Step In

Minor conflicts are learning opportunities, but if it escalates (e.g., bullying, emotional distress), you may need to intervene by talking to the other child's parents or a teacher.

Model Good Conflict Resolution

Show them through your own interactions how to handle disagreements respectfully.

Remind Them Friendships Have Ups and Downs

Teach them that occasional conflicts are normal and can strengthen relationships if handled well.
