A modem is a network device that allows computers and other digital devices to connect to the internet ¹. It does this by converting digital signals from computers into analog signals that can be transmitted over telephone lines or other communication channels ². Modems also convert analog signals back into digital signals so that computers can understand them ². Here are some other things modems can do ³:
- Modems correct data errors and control the flow and size of data that is sent to and from your network
- Modems tell connected devices when to transfer data, how much data to send, and how fast data transfers will be
- Modems can be used for a variety of tasks, such as file sharing, email, and online message boards
- Modems can be used to connect to the internet through a variety of channels, including phone lines, cable lines, fiber optic cables, and satellite connections
- Modems can be used to connect to the internet through a variety of technologies, including dial-up, DSL, cable, fiber optic, and satellite

A modem, short for modulator-demodulator, is a device that modulates analog signals from a computer or other digital device into digital signals for transmission over a communication line, and demodulates incoming digital signals into analog signals for reception. In simpler terms, it connects your devices to the internet by translating digital data from your computer into signals that can be transmitted over telephone or cable lines, and vice versa.
