The key differences between a home equity loan and a mortgage are

- A mortgage is used to buy a property, while a home equity loan allows homeowners to borrow against the equity they have built up in their homes.

- A mortgage is usually used for a longer period, such as 15 or 30 years, while a home equity loan has a shorter repayment period, typically ranging from five to 15 years.

- A mortgage can be fixed rate or variable, while a home equity loan is a fixed-rate loan.

- A mortgage can be used for any purpose, while a home equity loan is used to buy, build or improve a home.
